What is osteopathy for babies?

Osteopathy for babies is a gentle, hands-on approach that aims to support their movement, development, and overall wellbeing.

Using gentle, age-appropriate techniques, osteopathic treatment may help ease areas of tension, support comfortable movement and promote relaxation. Treatment may also consider factors related to feeding, breathing, digestion, sleep, and nervous system regulation, depending on your baby’s individual needs.

FAQs

Why would a baby see an osteopath?

Babies undergo many physical adaptations during pregnancy, birth, and the early months of life, and may develop areas of tension or restriction.

Osteopathy aims to assess and address musculoskeletal restrictions to support healthy development, comfort, and overall wellbeing, while considering factors that may influence feeding, digestion, and sleep.

Does my baby need to have a specific issue to see an osteopath?

Not at all. Many parents book an appointment simply for a post-birth check or to support their baby’s healthy development.

We gently assess movement, posture, and comfort to see how your baby is adapting, while looking for areas of tension or asymmetry. This allows us to provide individualised care and support your baby’s comfort as they grow.

What do osteopaths look for in babies?

We assess your baby’s movement, posture, comfort, and overall physical development. During an assessment, we observe how your baby moves and identify any areas of muscle tension or asymmetry.

We may also look at head shape and positioning, feeding posture and comfort, and how your baby responds to handling.

What kind of treatment do osteopaths provide?

Osteopaths use very gentle, hands-on techniques tailored to each baby’s age and individual needs. Treatment uses much lighter pressure than adult treatment and does not involve manipulation or “cracking”.

We also discuss any findings with parents and provide advice, recommendations, and/or home activities where appropriate.

What should I bring to my baby’s appointment?

Bring any baby essentials you may need, such as nappies, wipes, and feeding supplies.

If you have any relevant medical information or reports, please bring those along too. We also ask that you complete the intake form sent by email before your appointment so we can make the most of our time together.
